- FLOWTHRU displays groundwater flow patterns in an aquifer near a surface water body. Although written with shallow lakes in mind, the program also applies to wetlands, rivers, streams, canals and channels. The primary uses of FLOWTHRU are (i) for determining the depths of groundwater capture zones near shallow water bodies (analogous to the problem of wellhead protection), and (ii) as an educational tool, to allow users to visualise flow patterns near surface water bodies.

gaseous phases.
- ANTS Project. "The goals of this project are to develop an ANalytical
contaminant Transport Solution library with some model
selection guidances, ANTS. Ideally, a guidance will guide a
user to select the most appropriate analytical contaminant
transport model to predict the outcome of a contaminant
transport problem."
- RT3D (version 2.5) is now available at a
Battelle-Pacific Northwest National Laboratory web site.
A draft version of RT3D reference/ tutorial guide (in ADOBE PDF
format) is also available at the web site. RT3D is a multi-species
transport model developed from DoD_1.5 (1997) version of the public
domain code MT3D. RT3D can be used for modeling any type of
subsurface reactions including biological reactions.
- You can download a working demo of Micro-Fem. Micro-Fem is a set of several programs which takes you through the whole process of groundwater modeling, from the generation of a mesh through the stages of preprocessing, calculation, postprocessing, graphical interpretation and plotting.
A free
version of Micro-Fem has become available that can handle one and
two-aquifer systems with up to 2500 nodes per layer. All other features of
the professional version are retained.
The new zip-file, MICRO-FEM 3.1 LT (light version) comprises all Micro-Fem
programs, including FemPath (particle tracking) and FemInvs (inverse modeling).
- BUGS SCRATCHPAD,
a computer program designed to model many of the subsurface processes in
a two-dimensional saturated aquifer, including: advection and dispersion,
sorption and desorption, biotic and abiotic chemical reactions and equilibrium
conditions.
- Wen-Hsing Chiang has source code for MODFLOW and a functional demo of Processing MODFLOW for Windows. There is also a free beta version of the 2D-FD flow and transport model
Aquifer Simulation Model for Windows (ASMWIN) and a program BIN2ASC.EXE for converting the unformatted files MODFLOW output files to
ASCII.

-
Chunmiao Zheng has made available version 1.5 of MT3D and a version of MODFLOW with a link that links to it.
- Argus Numerical Environments Pre- and postprocessors for a variety of groundwater models. If you already have Argus Numerical Environments, you can download additional templates from their Export page. You can also download an evaluation version of Argus Numerical Environments. On Dec. 10, 1996, Argus offered a free upgrade to the new version 3 to licensed users of previous versions. There are free plug-ins for a variety of models including MODFLOW and MT3D.
- Source code from the books
"Mathematical Modeling of Groundwater Pollution", and "Inverse Problems in Ground Water Modeling" by Ne-Zheng Sun.
- Engineering Computer Graphics Laboratory. Demos of GMS, WMS, FastTABS, FastSeep, SMS, Cquel. Compiled versions of MODFLOW and MT3D are available on the page with the GMS demo. I have not tested these. It is possible that they will work only with GMS.

- Register of ecological models. A significant number of surface and groundwater models are included along with a large number of strictly ecological models. Most of the models can not be downloaded from this site although you may find the address to which you can write for a program here. You can search their programs by name, medium, or subject

Describes a project to create "user-friendly and efficient numerical software". Some codes can be downloaded. They are not specifically groundwater related but they may be of interest to developers of groundwater modeling programs.
The following sites have source code or executables but it may be impossible to connect to these sites using Netscape or Mosaic. Instead you may have to use an ftp program such as WS_FTP to link to them. Some contain files that are compressed as TAR.Z or TAR.GZ files. They can be decompressed with WinZip. I recieved a message from R. Steven Regan at the USGS stating that these sites would be discontinued or restricted to internal USGS use. The files in these sites are experimental versions that have not been approved by the USGS.
